It’s common knowledge that exposure to mold can make you sick. Mold spores can be airborne of transferred by touching surfaces. Molds flourish in moist worm climates. In fighting mold, prevention is critical.

Part 1 – Preventing Mold

  1. Control Moisture: Mold thrives in damp environments, so controlling moisture is crucial. Keep humidity levels in check (ideally between 30% and 60%) with the help of dehumidifiers or air conditioners, especially in areas prone to moisture buildup like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements.
  2. Fix Leaks Promptly: Address any leaks or water damage immediately. Whether it’s a leaking pipe, roof, or window, repairing the source of moisture promptly prevents mold from thriving.
  3. Improve Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in areas where moisture tends to accumulate, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Use exhaust fans or open windows during and after activities that generate moisture, like cooking or showering.
  4. Use Mold-Resistant Products: When renovating or building, consider using mold-resistant materials like mold-resistant drywall, paints, and insulation in areas prone to moisture.
  5. Monitor Indoor Plants: Overwatering indoor plants can create excess moisture and promote mold growth. Be mindful of watering habits and ensure proper drainage for potted plants.
  6. Keep Surfaces Clean and Dry: Regularly clean and dry surfaces prone to moisture, such as shower walls, sinks, and windowsills. Wipe up spills promptly and use mold-inhibiting cleaning products as needed.
  7. Avoid Free Standing Water: Check on hidden areas like basements or crawl spaces. Make sure there are no puddles or moist areas where mold can grow.

Prevention is Key

Remember, preventing mold growth is often easier and more cost-effective than dealing with a full-blown infestation. By addressing moisture issues promptly and maintaining a clean and dry indoor environment, you can minimize the risk of mold growth and ensure a healthy living or working space for yourself and others. The best detectors of mold are your eyes and your nose. Mold is dark and can have fur-like growth. Mold smells…well, moldy.
