Last month we discussed all the preparations that needed to be made to the exterior of your building. Today we have a new checklist to make sure you’ve prepared the interior of your building as we enter into the winter months:

Interior Preparation for Winter

  • Service Heating System:
    • Schedule a professional inspection and maintenance for your furnace or boiler.
    • Replace or clean filters in your HVAC system.
    • Test the heating system to ensure it’s working efficiently.
  • Check Insulation:
    • Inspect attic, walls, and basement for adequate insulation.
    • Add extra insulation if necessary, particularly in attics.
    • Insulate pipes in colder areas to prevent freezing.
  • Inspect Windows and Doors:
    • Install storm windows if applicable.
    • Replace worn weather stripping and repair caulking around windows and doors.
    • Consider using thermal curtains to retain heat.
  • Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
    • Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
    • Ensure detectors are functioning properly.
    • Add detectors if they are not already installed in key areas.
  • Prepare Emergency Supplies:
    • Stock up on winter essentials like rock salt, sand, and snow shovels.
    • Ensure you have an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food.
    • Prepare a backup heating source, such as a portable generator with a heater or fireplace, in case of power outages.
    • Stock up on fuel and store it safely.
  • Reverse Ceiling Fans:
    • Set ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air downward.
  • Protect Indoor Plumbing:
    • Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent pipes from freezing.
    • Know where your main water shutoff valve is located in case of a burst pipe.
