Last month we discussed all the preparations that needed to be made to the exterior of your building. Today we have a new checklist to make sure you’ve prepared the interior of your building as we enter into the winter months:
Interior Preparation for Winter
- Service Heating System:
- Schedule a professional inspection and maintenance for your furnace or boiler.
- Replace or clean filters in your HVAC system.
- Test the heating system to ensure it’s working efficiently.
- Check Insulation:
- Inspect attic, walls, and basement for adequate insulation.
- Add extra insulation if necessary, particularly in attics.
- Insulate pipes in colder areas to prevent freezing.
- Inspect Windows and Doors:
- Install storm windows if applicable.
- Replace worn weather stripping and repair caulking around windows and doors.
- Consider using thermal curtains to retain heat.
- Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
- Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Ensure detectors are functioning properly.
- Add detectors if they are not already installed in key areas.
- Prepare Emergency Supplies:
- Stock up on winter essentials like rock salt, sand, and snow shovels.
- Ensure you have an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food.
- Prepare a backup heating source, such as a portable generator with a heater or fireplace, in case of power outages.
- Stock up on fuel and store it safely.
- Reverse Ceiling Fans:
- Set ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to push warm air downward.
- Protect Indoor Plumbing:
- Let faucets drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent pipes from freezing.
- Know where your main water shutoff valve is located in case of a burst pipe.
